The importance of beginning an embodiment practice
Embodiment is such a new buzz word and for good reason. To me, being embodied means to fully inhabit our humanity as well as our spiritual nature. Life is set up for disconnection. Look around you. Between social media, the ability to binge watch entire television shows, to news, shopping and alternate realities available at the touch of a button or a swipe – it is no wonder we are so disengaged. Top that with any type of traumatic experience that took you out of your body to begin with and you absolutely have a recipe for disaster.
For me, this was my life for soooo long. I was numb and disassociated as far back as I could remember but as many of you can relate, I didn’t even realize it. Why? Because it had become the norm. The amazing news is that even though it may feel like “normal” or your baseline – regardless of how off you have been and no matter how long – you can always return to center.
How do we do that? Well get back into your body of course! It sounds so simple; although I believe simplicity is at the root of many of life’s solutions that does not always equate easy!
Practice makes perfect. With every good routine – you must do it over and over to retrain your nervous system back to homeostasis. But why is embodiment important to begin with?
Trauma is stored in your body on a cellular level – therefore for true healing to occur you must involve the body.
Trauma is stored in the brain separate from language – this means you can’t talk your way out of it. In fact, for this reason you may not even had the words to ever completely articulate your trauma!
Energy needs to move through and out and you can’t do that from a stagnant place. In fact, you probably feel stuck in your mind because you are not physically in motion. This is the reason why things like workouts and dancing feel so good.
Bringing harmony into our lives, feeling clarity, organized and at peace begins within ourselves, always. You can never escape yourself in the process of healing although escaping was a way to cope with the trauma to begin with – you will find that life will send you invitations when it knows you are safe and ready to process it. You are positively stronger than you believe, and the process of true embodiment does not require any special skill, just your willingness to be present. To give yourself the thing you have always longed for outside of yourself. If you would like more information on how I can assist you in the process – feel free to contact me. I look forward to supporting you.
